Book Review by Jane Palmer

Written by Michelle Neumann

Illustrated by Kaye Forster

2007, Finch Publishing

According to Michelle Neumann, author of this new book Updowns, having fun is the most important thing when introducing reading, writing and early literacy skills to your child. I must say I support Michelle's point of view.

My four year old daughter Lia and I explored UpDowns from cover to cover. The book is well written and easy to follow. There are clear explanations to simple activities designed to encourage your child to explore the world of letters and encourage a love of reading.

With seven beautifully illustrated stories included - there is plenty of opportunity to practice the proposed activities. Lia just loved the stories and seeks out the book to "practice reading".  I've seen a real change in the way Lia looks at letters and words since following some of the ideas presented in the book. As a parent, Up Downs gave me lots of alternative ideas to improve Lia's literacy skills in a fun way.

Michelle says that parent-child activities that are out lined in the book have a very positive effect on children's early literacy development. I highly recommend this book.

Jane's rating     (4 out of 5)
