Dear Sally - Thank you so much for your feedback. We rely on the public to let us know when we miss out on lising a birth centre or to tell us if the details have changed. So if any one else sees an error or omission can you please let us know.

There's also a birth centre in Townsville QLD, and another one to open in Toowoomba QLD.

Feb 18, 2011 6:55am [ 4 ]

Thanks Becky for letting us know. We've now updated this page to included these two birth centres. It is great that the list of birth centres is growing

The birth centre at the Women's in Melbourne has been lost, as has the Geelong Family Birthing Unit. Both closed.

Apr 1, 2011 2:01pm [ 6 ]

Hi Melissa - thank you for the update. It is very sad that two birth centres have been closed down.

i have been reading some articles about birth centres, and can only find one in WA, it mentions 3 in WA (in 1995) - does anyone know where the other 2 were?

Apr 26, 2011 7:49am [ 8 ]

Hi Kendra - I personally don't. But what I have been finding during my research on Birth Centres is that they are slowly being closed down across Australia.

Why are birth centres being closed down?

Nov 10, 2011 8:38am [ 10 ]

Bambi I am unsure of the reason why birth centres are being closed down. In some areas there is little support for alternative birth options.

I attempted to book at the monash medical centre in Clayton,Vic but was refused because I don't live in their 'catchment'. Do you have any ideas how I can get around this as the birth entre in heidelburg is too far away from me.

I believe that the William Angliss family birth centre has closed as they are updating their birthing program. But waiting to find out more info.

Hi guys,

The fbc at both the Angliss and the mercy are closed/closing down :(

Jul 29, 2013 6:49am [ 16 ]

Hi Bec - thanks for the update. I have deleted both these hospitals off the list. It seams we hardly have any birth centres left

The NT has a birth centre located at Royal Darwin Hospital

Hi Kelly - thanks for the update. It looks like it was opened in 2012. I have now added Royal Darwin Hospital's birth centre to the list. It is great to see a birth centre opening up (quite a few have been closing down recently).

I am disgusted that their are no stand a low, midwifery led 'birth centers' in Victoria. Where is 'women's choice'. This reflects the strong hold the medical model has in Victoria. Thank-you for your informative website.

Mullumbimby has a birth centre http://nnswlhd.health.nsw.gov.au/about/hospitals/mullumbimby-district-war-memorial-hospital/mullumbimby-birth-centre/

Murwillumbah hospital gives women the option to birth with a midwife of their choice and often a student midwife who will give you continuity of care, from booking in to 6 weeks after baby is born. They have beautiful birht rooms overlooking the country side. You must be within their catchment....water birth too :) http://nnswlhd.health.nsw.gov.au/about/hospitals/murwillumbah-district-hospital/

I am a student Midwife and if I was having another baby in a hospital, I would pick Murbah'. It is a very homely environment x

Hi Noirin - there is a distinct lack of birth centres across Australia - I think it is a travesty.

Hi Tani - thanks for the update at Mullumbinmby - I have now added Mullumbiby Birth Centre to the list above. We rely on people informing us of changes.

Hi there, I am a permanent resident of Australia and was privileged to have my first babe in America at a free standing birth center. I'm wondering if there are any birth centers in the Sydney region that are not attached to a hospital?

Thank you

Hi Kelley - unfortunately there are no free standing birth centres in New South Wales at the moment

Monash med no longer has a birth centre - Victoria now has NOTHING!

Mar 16, 2014 1:08pm [ 25 ]

Hi Jess - this is so sad. Now Victoria do not have a birth centre left. Options for women are decreasing instead of increasing.

Hi - there is a birth centre at Mercy in Heidelberg, in Victoria! Not all is lost. http://www.mercy.com.au/MaternityAndEarlyParentingServices/HavingababyatMHW/MaternityGroupPracticeintheFamilyBirth_Centre/

A new Birth Centre has been opened at Calvary Hospital in the ACT. The ACT now has 2. Canberra is definitely punching above its weight given how few others are around!

That is great news Jess. I have added Calvary to the list

Hello, i'm a midwife in Victoria and i would love to know how to go about opening a birth centre. Everyone always tells me i need to be rich to open one - so maybe its a cost issue as to why they have closed. Anyway if anyone knows how to open one please let me know. Ta Alicia
