Dear Sally - Thank you so much for your feedback. We rely on the public to let us know when we miss out on lising a birth centre or to tell us if the details have changed. So if any one else sees an error or omission can you please let us know.
Thanks Becky for letting us know. We've now updated this page to included these two birth centres. It is great that the list of birth centres is growing
The birth centre at the Women's in Melbourne has been lost, as has the Geelong Family Birthing Unit. Both closed.
i have been reading some articles about birth centres, and can only find one in WA, it mentions 3 in WA (in 1995) - does anyone know where the other 2 were?
Hi Kendra - I personally don't. But what I have been finding during my research on Birth Centres is that they are slowly being closed down across Australia.
Bambi I am unsure of the reason why birth centres are being closed down. In some areas there is little support for alternative birth options.
I attempted to book at the monash medical centre in Clayton,Vic but was refused because I don't live in their 'catchment'. Do you have any ideas how I can get around this as the birth entre in heidelburg is too far away from me.
I believe that the William Angliss family birth centre has closed as they are updating their birthing program. But waiting to find out more info.
Sorry for the bad news but the birthing centre at the mercy is also being closed down. Its a shame. Good luck
Hi Bec - thanks for the update. I have deleted both these hospitals off the list. It seams we hardly have any birth centres left
Hi Kelly - thanks for the update. It looks like it was opened in 2012. I have now added Royal Darwin Hospital's birth centre to the list. It is great to see a birth centre opening up (quite a few have been closing down recently).
I am disgusted that their are no stand a low, midwifery led 'birth centers' in Victoria. Where is 'women's choice'. This reflects the strong hold the medical model has in Victoria. Thank-you for your informative website.
Mullumbimby has a birth centre http://nnswlhd.health.nsw.gov.au/about/hospitals/mullumbimby-district-war-memorial-hospital/mullumbimby-birth-centre/
Murwillumbah hospital gives women the option to birth with a midwife of their choice and often a student midwife who will give you continuity of care, from booking in to 6 weeks after baby is born. They have beautiful birht rooms overlooking the country side. You must be within their catchment....water birth too :) http://nnswlhd.health.nsw.gov.au/about/hospitals/murwillumbah-district-hospital/
I am a student Midwife and if I was having another baby in a hospital, I would pick Murbah'. It is a very homely environment x
Hi Noirin - there is a distinct lack of birth centres across Australia - I think it is a travesty.
Hi Tani - thanks for the update at Mullumbinmby - I have now added Mullumbiby Birth Centre to the list above. We rely on people informing us of changes.
