Dear Sally - Thank you so much for your feedback. We rely on the public to let us know when we miss out on lising a birth centre or to tell us if the details have changed. So if any one else sees an error or omission can you please let us know.

There's also a birth centre in Townsville QLD, and another one to open in Toowoomba QLD.

Thanks Becky for letting us know. We've now updated this page to included these two birth centres. It is great that the list of birth centres is growing

The birth centre at the Women's in Melbourne has been lost, as has the Geelong Family Birthing Unit. Both closed.

Hi Melissa - thank you for the update. It is very sad that two birth centres have been closed down.

i have been reading some articles about birth centres, and can only find one in WA, it mentions 3 in WA (in 1995) - does anyone know where the other 2 were?

Hi Kendra - I personally don't. But what I have been finding during my research on Birth Centres is that they are slowly being closed down across Australia.

Why are birth centres being closed down?

Nov 10, 2011 8:38am [ 10 ]

Bambi I am unsure of the reason why birth centres are being closed down. In some areas there is little support for alternative birth options.

I attempted to book at the monash medical centre in Clayton,Vic but was refused because I don't live in their 'catchment'. Do you have any ideas how I can get around this as the birth entre in heidelburg is too far away from me.

I believe that the William Angliss family birth centre has closed as they are updating their birthing program. But waiting to find out more info.
