About Sattva
Biography:
Even as a little girl Karen always remembers wanting to become a Doctor.

The modality of Western Medicine however didnít Ďspeakí to her. Never the less she decided to study Nursing.

After graduating as a Registered Nurse Karen realised that nursing was not a profession that she was or could ever get passionate about.

Through her experience she had learned that the main priority of the Western Medical model was to save life and treat disease. While she saw these as noble goals she also noticed that there was little if any effort directed towards preventing illness from occurring in the first place. This made absolutely no sense to her.

After much soul searching Karen discovered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). For her it was like taking a breath of fresh air. She had finally found her calling and was on a serious path to fulfilling her dream of becoming a Doctor, albeit of a different kind.

With her passion for Chinese Medicine ignited she studied a double degree in Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture, at Victoria University in Melbourne.

In 2005 she completed her studies with a two month clinical internship at Liao Ning College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. She graduated from both degrees with honours.

Since graduating she has developed a special interest in the area of Womenís Health, obstetrics and gynaecology.

She is a regular contributor to the National Association of Childbirth Educators (NACE) journal. Writing on topics aimed at informing health care professionals and consumers on how best to use TCM safely and effectively.

The Australian Breastfeeding Associationís (ABA) Lactation Resource Centre has also published one of Karenís case studies on the topic of how to use TCM to treat mastitis.

For 4 years Karen sat as a voluntary member on the Chinese Medicine Registration Board Reference Group.

The role of the Reference Group is to discuss and advise the Board on issues that arise from and affect the profession of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Australia. It was a great privilege for her to be given the wonderful opportunity to contribute to the shaping of her much loved profession.
