    Pregnancy massage

Hi! I just want to know if it is alright for pregnant women to get a massage? Is there any particular trimester when massage should be avoided?

    Hello Venus,

It is very beneficial for pregnant women to have massages. I had massages throughout my entire pregnancy with my first child - one per month.

The only thing I would caution you about is to be sure that the person giving the massage is familiar with pregnancy massage so that she does not stimulate uterine contractions before the 40th week. Massage therapists who are familiar with accupressure can actually help a woman to go into labour or strengthen contractions once in labour by pressing on certain points of the body.

There is also concern about massage on the legs during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters so precaution should be taken. This video shows very well why massage is beneficial and at the same time, why it's important to use precautions when performing massage on a pregnant woman.

Please post back with your thoughts.

Here's a resource if you're looking for a pregnancy massage therapist.

Sounds very relaxing - maybe I will get one. You can get specialised pregnancy massages in my area which I would choose rather than a general massage.

    Thanks for the info Kate.

    Best wishes,

I loved my monthly pregnancy massages - and the massage therapist even came to my home during labour. Unfortunately she ended up getting there as I was pushing (would have LOVED to have had her there earlier) but after the birth she gave me a foot massages, and that felt SOOOO good.

Let us know if you get a massage, and how it was. If we had the funds, I'd have a massage every week because they are so relaxing.

    Warm Regards,

    Kate

Here's an excellent video dispelling myths about massage during pregnancy, and especially addressing the question "Is massage during the first trimester safe?"
