Have you breastfed in a different culture to your own?
My family recently travelled to Thailand. I am breastfeeding my 8th month old and very occasionally breastfeed my 2.5 year old.
Has anyone on the forum breastfed in a different culture to your own? How did you find this experience? Was it overall a positive or negative experience?
In Thailand, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life is very low - less than 5%. However, I always felt comfortable breastfeeding in public and I received lots of positive comments. Many people commented that my son looks very healthy and a good weight and they felt this was due to him having breastmilk.
A Thai friend of mine said that she thought breastfeeding rates were so low as most women have to go back to work soon after having their baby. Lots of women work long hours and find it difficult to have enough breaks to express.
I would be interested to read about your experiences.
