    is breastfeeding safe?

Is breastfeeding still recommended when the mum has untreated infection? Is it safe for the baby?

    Hi Jerika,

Breastfeeding is recommended by the World Health Organisation for the first two years of life and beyond (with exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life). There are hardly any medical conditions which mean you could not breastfeed. In fact:

'HIV and HTLV-1 are the only infectious diseases that are considered absolute contraindications to breastfeeding in developed countries' (Lawrence & Lawrence 2001)

What type of infection were you referring to?

Breastfeeding really is a fabulous way to feed your baby!

    Best wishes,

    LJ
