Help and Info needed for 29 weeks pregnant migrating to Australia by 8-Oct'13

    Hi All

We are Indian Couple and I'm in my week 29 and would be migrating using PR to Australia by 8-Oct-2013.

I want to know what first steps to get the pregnancy care and to get my delivery safely.

I also have below queries listed:

    1. Is medicals free for us, as we have valid Permanent Residence visa.
    2. Should I visit any GP to know more about the steps to be carried out?
    3. If yes, please suggest any public hospitals for delivery near Homebush, Sydney region.

Your help on this is much appreciated!

    Thanks
    Anitha

    Hi Anitha,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your pregnancy.

Permanant residents are entitled to free care as a public patient (in a public hospital). In Australia, care is either free or subsidised by a service called Medicare. There is more information on Medicare here. Based on what you have described, you would be eligible for this service.

You may want to consider taking out an insurance policy to cover additional services or private services when you have your baby. I believe that the way Medicare works means only your treatment whilst you are in hospital is free.

Have you thought about what your wishes for the birth are and what type of birth you would like? There is a lot more information here on birthing options. Births which are led by a midwife generally lead to less interventions with a higher chance of a natural delivery. There is detailed information on choosing a practitioner here.

I hope this information is helpful for you.

    Warm wishes,

    LJ
