    Vitamins and nutrition in pregnancy

    I know that the Folic acid is very important in pregnancy. Please tell me, why is it so important? Which foods contain Folic acid?

    Dear Jovana2401,

    You are right - folic acid is very important in pregnancy. It is recommended that all pregnant women take folic acid supplements (0.4 milligrams) for the month leading up to conception and at least the first trimester of pregnancy. Folic acid helps the baby to develop normally in pregnancy and prevents against neural tube defects including spinal bifida. It also helps to produce healthy red blood cells.

    As well as taking the folic acid supplement, it is good to eat food that contains a high level of folic acid including: tofu, wholegrain bread, broccoli, spinach, chick peas and brown rice.
