Unhappy Am I having another miscarriage?!

Last week I had my first look at my baby. It was 7 weeks old and had a healthy heartbeat. Today I woke to some spotting and immediately went to my doctor. I had another ultrasound and they could not find the heartbeat anymore. I was told I need a D&C.
However, the technician seemed to be stuffing around a lot and there are things that are starting to make me wonder about the whole thing. The bleeding stopped after I went to the toilet in the morning. I have had 2 miscarriages before and the bleeding has never stopped so suddenly and was always heavier. I am in no pain and still feel sick. I've heard stories that miscarriages can be misdiagnosed. Now I don't know what to do. Is it worth getting a second opinion or am I just setting myself up for more heartbreak? Has anyone heard about a heartbeat being missed? And from an internal ultrasound?
The technician gave me no confidence at all. The last one found my baby with the external scan with a half full bladder. This one couldn't see anything when I was about to explode!!

    Dear Sara,

I'm sorry to hear about the worrying time you are going through at the moment and I am also sorry to hear that you have had two miscarriages.

With an internal scan you don't need to have a full bladder. Unfortunately, it could just be that this technician spent more time looking around with your scan because he/ she was looking for a heartbeat and very sadly couldn't find one.

However, if you feel unconfident in your technician then ask for a second opinion. Perhaps you should prepare yourself that it will probably sadly be the same news you have already heard that they cannot find a heartbeat. But if you are doubting the technician's opinion then it is something you may always doubt/ wonder so is worth getting a second opinion.

With some miscarriages the bleeding can stop, which is when a D&C is often recommended as the miscarriage is not going to pass naturally.

Doing another urine pregnancy test at this stage would not be accurate as, if you are going through a miscarriage, such a test can falsely show as positive depending on what stage in the miscarriage it is.

    Thinking of you,

    LJ

    Hi Sara

Like LJ, I am very sorry to hear of your current predicament and your past miscarriages. It is very unlikely that the heartbeat has been missed but if you do not feel confident in the diagnosis, you should seek a second opinion from someone you trust. To do otherwise might leave you always wondering if perhaps your baby was in fact still alive. Your heart will be broken either way so better to assure yourself that a D&C is the right thing to do.

I have experienced recurrent miscarriage. In one instance like you I had a scan at 7 weeks which seemed fine and then at 13 weeks no heartbeat could be found. I refused to accept the technician's conclusion for similar reasons to you. In my heart I guess I knew it was true, but I had doubts. I contacted my IVF specialist, a man I trusted immensely, and he agreed to see me first thing the following morning. He confirmed my baby had died. My heart was no more or less broken but I did know for certain which allowed me to go into a D&C without any fear that it was the wrong decision.

My heart goes out to you Sara. Please post back if you feel the need to talk.

    Best Regards
    Yvette
