    First time Contraception

    Hi fellow mums!

I am planning to use any kind of contraception but don't know which one is okay. What can you say is most convenient to use and most effective based on your experiences? What would you recommend?

    Hi MaryMumOfTwo

Contraception is a tricky question to which there are many answers. The type of contraception that works best for you and your partner may depend on how long you are intended to use it for, any past experiences you have had with contraception (both positive and negative), your general health, your lifestyle, and how important it is that you do not fall pregnant. What works well for one couple or individual may well not be right for another.

Assuming you want the option to fall pregnant in the future, contraceptives available you could use include physical barriers and devices (like condoms and IUDs), hormonal treatments (oral, implant and injectable contraceptives), and natural family planning methods.

If both you and your partner are on the same page in terms of your reasons for using contraception, discussing your options with your doctor or reproductive health nurse will ensure that you are well informed and can make a decision which is best for you both.

I am not sure what country you are in but for instance in Australia each state has a dedicated family planning website. Here is the one for my home state of New South Wales: Family Planning NSW A Google search for 'family planning' and your state or province should give you your best contact. This can provide a great start for you and your partner to discuss your desires and options.

    Beat of luck!

Thanks for these tips! I better discuss this with my husband first and then my doctor to see what is best to use.

    Best regards!
