Unhappy How Long Does It Last

How long does the depression last?

    Dear Diane,

Postnatal depression typically lasts between 3 and 6 months. However, the earlier a woman gets help for postnatal depression the quicker it is likely to resolve because of the support, help or medications she is getting. For some women, postnatal depression can last a year or longer. What's really key is to start asking for help (and talking to those around you about this) as soon as you recognise any of the symptoms of postnatal depression in yourself. Postnatal depression is very common (around 1 in 5 women suffer from it) and it is certainly nothing to feel guilty about.

If you or someone you know think they may have postnatal depression please speak to your doctor about this as soon as you can. There are lots of support groups out there. Some women find Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or counselling helps them. For severe depression your doctor may recommend you take anti-depressants.

Please do post back if we can help answer any further questions about this.

    Warm wishes,
    LJ
