Regular readers may remember there was some vigorous discussion at Croakey earlier this year after a SA study comparing the outcomes for homebirths and hospital births generated misleading headline. The coverage largely reflected the slant put on the study by the Medical Journal of Australia’s press release and an accompanying editorial by the AMA president, Dr Andrew Pesce (see here, here and here, for example of the previous Croakey posts).
This is a great article that highlights the media's misrepresentation of research to suit their own circumstances. The research article that all the reports were based upon was extremely poor in design and not something you could use to make an informed decision about homebirth. While I must admit some of the media in the last 12 months has been quite positive on homebirth - I was amazed at the speed and misrepresentation of this particular piece of research.
