When is the best time to take pregnancy test?

When is the best time to take pregnancy test?

    Hi jellyace,

You can take a home pregnancy test (this works by testing the levels of the pregnancy hormone hCG present in the urine) from the first day your period is due. Home pregnancy tests have different levels of sensitivity. Some are able to detect a pregnancy in the days leading up to your period, however, it is most reliable to wait until at least the day your period is due. Some doctors recommend testing for pregnancy at home one week after your period is due.

The pregnancy hormone approximately doubles in level every 48 hours in the first trimester.

If you get a positive (i.e. 'pregnant') result on a pregnancy test then this is highly, highly accurate. However, you may get a false negative result on a pregnancy test (i.e. the test says you are not pregnant when you actually are pregnant) if you test too early or you do not follow the manufacturer's instructions. You should also check that the test is in date.

You can do the pregnancy test in the morning because the level of hCG is most concentrated in the urine at this time.

Blood tests for hCG can be performed earlier than urine pregnancy tests.

Please do post back if you have any further questions about pregnancy tests.

    Warm wishes,

    LJ
