    Breastmilk and Reducing Cancer

Breastmilk is a phenomenal liquid - I think that this is something all parents-to-be should be made aware of. This is why the decision of how to feed one's baby should not be taken lightly. It is also why excellent breastfeeding support is essential for new mums. Not only does breastmilk have huge advantages for the baby at the time of breastfeeding (in terms of nutrient content, immunity properties and emotional and developmental advantages to name but a few); breastmilk also has cancer-reducing properties.

Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce a woman's chance of suffering from breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Current research indicates that the more months spent breastfeeding, the lower the risk of these types of cancer.

Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of childhood cancer in the feeding baby. This includes: lymphoblastic leukemia, Hodgkin's disease and certain central nervous system cancers.

Current clinical trials are continuing to further the research which is showing that breastmilk can destroy cancer cells in cancer patients. It seems that there is a substance in breastmilk (known as 'HAMLET') which makes certain types of cancer cell die and exit the body.

So, breastmilk can protect both mum and baby from cancer and is being used in trials to treat many types of cancer in patients. Breastmilk really is incredible; there's nothing else like it.
