    Iud

Has any mums used a Intrauterine Contraceptive device for birth control?
What were the pros vs cons?

    Dear sunnymumof5,

Here is a previous thread where some of our forum members discussed their experiences with IUDs.

    The advantages of IUDs are:
    - it is a long-lasting contraception (5-10 years)
    - some IUDs are more than 99% effective
    - you don't have to think about contraception on a day-to-day basis
    - safe to use when breastfeeding
    - it is a reversible form of contraception

    The disadvantages include that:
    - it is common in the 6 months after it being put in place to have changes to your periods such as them becoming longer or more uncomfortable
    - if you do get pregnant (although this is unlikely) then there is an increased risk of the pregnancy being ectopic
    - there is a small chance of infection in the first month
    - some women do not agree ethically with the fact that an IUD not only stops sperm surviving in the womb; it also can prevent a fertilised egg from implanting

I hope this information helps you.

    Best wishes,
    LJ

Thank you for the response LJ,
i had a unique experience with a paraguard, the copper IUD and ended up having it removed. I'd love to check out that link and see how other mothers fared with theirs.
I am now using NFP and its going great so far.

    Dear sunnymumof5,

I know many women who have tried Paragard find that there periods can be more painful and heavier in the first 6 months.

A number of our forum members use natural family planning; you are in good company here

    Thanks,
    LJ

    ljmarsden,
That was exactly the case for me. I had very heavy cycles that lasted for a week or more.
Thank you for being so supportive.

That must have been difficult sunnymumof5. I'm glad you are getting on well with natural family planning.

    Warm wishes,
    LJ
