    Blighted Ovum

Hi, I would like to know why some pregnancy resulted to a blighted ovum and what causes it?

    Dear proud2beamum,

Thank you for your question. A blighted ovum is also known as an anembryonic pregnancy. This occurs when a pregnancy sac develops but sadly an embryo does not develop within the pregnancy sac. Therefore, this pregnancy will unfortunately result in a miscarriage. It is thought that most blighted ovums are caused by a problem with the number of chromosomes forming the pregnancy. Most women who experience a blighted ovum do not experience a subsequent one.

Unfortunately a blighted ovum (and any form of miscarriage) is more common in older mums (aged over 35 years old) because the quality of a woman's eggs decreases with age.

I hope this helps to answer your question. Please do post back if you have any further questions about this.

    Warm wishes,
    LJ
