    How safe is it to do sit-ups or abdominal crunches during pregnancy?

    Being an expectant mom and with a passion to exercise so as to keep fit i would like to know if its safe to do sit ups especially in the last months of pregnancy.

    In terms of overall exercise levels in pregnancy it is advised to continue exercising at a level similar to your pre-pregnancy level (avoiding contact sports). In terms of abdominal crunches, these would be safe in terms of the motion and muscles involved but it is laying on your back which is best avoided from the second trimester onwards. This is because the weight of the baby can cause restricted blood flow when you are laying on your back.

    Do you have a birthing ball? Exercises on a birthing ball are great in pregnancy - and it also helps with getting your baby into a good position for the labour.
