What is a recommended age for a child to have their own cell phone?

Having 5 children, I honestly feel this is a family to family decision.
What may be a perfect solution for one family may be quite opposite for another.
We home school and so our children go just about every where with us. We haven't found much of a need for cell phones before the age of 13 or 14.
Around that age other peers tend to have phones and so the want rather than he need is present.
Id suggest lots of communication between you and your child and find out why they want one or why you want them to have one. You may find that its not needed or that it IS something that will benefit the family in the long run.
I do suggest that you go strictly prepaid for teens cell phones. No contract plans are great and no extra hidden fees added in.
Let us know how that works out for you.
    Blessings
