Question Effect of Environment after Giving Birth

Does the living environment/surrounding of a woman after giving birth has an effect to cause post natal depression?

    Dear milkandboo,

    Thank you for your question.

Yes it can. A difficult, stressful or dangerous living environment increases the likelihood that a woman will experience post natal depression. Post natal depression is very common anyway (around 1 in 5 women who have had children will suffer from it). There is so much to get used to after having a baby and a woman's hormone levels will also be changing; if you add into this a less than ideal living environment then post natal depression is more likely.

There is never anything to be ashamed of when you have postnatal depression. What is important is to start talking to those around you about it and to ask for help from your doctor or midwife.

There are some more links about postnatal depression here.

    Thinking of you,
