Why do fat women don't get pregnant?

My sister-in-law has been married for 5 years now. She and her husband have been longing for a child, but she is having difficulty getting pregnant. The doctor said it's because she is fat.

Why does being fat reduces the chance of getting pregnant?

    Dear workingmum,

Thank you for your post. I'm sorry to hear that your sister-in-law and her husband have not conceived yet.

If a woman is very overweight it can affect her fertility levels. In particular, if her BMI (body mass index) is above 30 then it can mean that a woman's fertility is reduced. This is often because being very overweight can affect the way a woman ovulates. Starting to eat healthily (with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables) and exercise regularly can help with this. Has your sister-in-law's doctor suggested a healthy eating plan and exercise regime.

Being overweight is also a symptom associated with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) - has your sister-in-law been assessed for this? Other symptoms include having irregular periods, excessive hair growth and acne.

Whilst many overweight women do successfully conceive, it is better to start pregnancy at a healthy weight. This is because being overweight puts the pregnancy at a higher risk - for example women are more at risk of developing gestational diabetes.

    Warm wishes,
