    vegetarian diet during pregnancy?

    I have been on a vegetarian (no meat!) diet for the past 11 years. Has anyone maintained a vegetarian diet while pregnant? How easy/hard was it for you? Did you or your bub have any complications or health issues from the diet?

    Great question!
    As more and more women find themselves vegetarians more information is showing up in the vegan community.
    Here is an article from The Vegetarian Resource Group about pregnancy.

    I see that slow weight gain can be an issue for pregnant moms.
    If you continue reading further down they do suggest ideas that pregnant moms can follow to increase caloric intake through a pregnancy.

    Hope that you can find answers to some of your concerns in the article.

    My sister-in-law tried to maintain a vegetarian diet throughout her pregnancy but during the last few months had a lot of issues maintaining her iron levels and was very fatigued. But many people do manage to maintain the diet throughout pregnancy.

    I am in my 30th week of pregnancy, I am a 100 percent non-vegetarian, I don't like to have green vegetables and all stuff. Is that this non-veg diet can create any issues during my pregnancy? What about eggs, I used to take 2 eggs in a day generally.

    Generally I love to eat chicken these days and boiled eggs.

    I had both my daughters exclusively vegetarian. I usually do not eat egg and cheeses or drink straight milk, however I made sure to drink two to three glasses of hormone free milk and eat one to two egg and cheeses each day, as well as eating other dairy such as yogurt and cheese. Both went great. I did not use protein shakes, I did not know if they were safe, and I am not using them this time. However, if I knew they were safe it would make getting enough protein easier and more enjoyable!

    Btw, has anyone eaten protein mix during pregnancy and/or know it to be safe?

    Diet recommendations

    Elizabeth Somer, a dietitian and the author of Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy:

    1. Four servings of cooked dried beans and peas, because they're full of zinc, iron, and protein. A few nuts and seeds can also be added.

    2. Four servings of calcium-rich foods, including nonfat or low-fat cow's milk or calcium- and vitamin D-fortified soy milk. "Look for foods that have 300 mg of calcium per serving, which equals about 30 percent of the Daily Value as listed on the label," says Somer. Cheese and cottage cheese are good for calcium, but they don't supply the vitamin D your body needs to absorb it and move it into the bones.

    3. Eight to ten servings of fruits and vegetables, because they're full of antioxidants. "I recommend five to seven servings of vegetables and three to five of fruit," says Somer.

    4. Six to 11 servings of whole grains, including foods such as brown rice, oatmeal, and whole wheat bread.

    5. One or more servings of a food that provides vitamin B12, such as milk, fortified soy milk, egg yolk, or fermented soy like miso or tempeh.

    Note that these amounts differ somewhat from the amounts recommended recommended by the USDA for pregnant women. They've been developed by Somer specifically to fulfill the needs of pregnant vegetarians.
