Thank you for posting this question.
Yes miscarriage is an understandable topic of concern for many, many pregnant women and those trying to conceive.
Sadly, miscarriages are quite common. They can happen to a woman of any age (no matter how young she is) although they are more likely to occur as the woman's age increases. The majority of miscarriages would sadly have always of occurred. Most miscarriages are thought to be caused by a problem with the number of chromosomes in the embryo. In the majority of cases there is nothing the woman could or could not have done to prevent the miscarriage from occurring. This does not diminish the loss and bereavement that a family feels when they go through a miscarriage.
Here are some statistics on the chance of a miscarriage occurring:
- age under 30 : 20% chance of miscarriage
- age 30-39 : 25% chance of miscarriage
- age 40-44 : 50% chance of miscarriage
- age 45+ : 95% chance of miscarriage
The chance of having a miscarriage is also higher in women who are: overweight, underweight, smoke, drink more than moderately and have a partner aged over 40.
