    Loss of pregnancy symptoms

    Hello,

I am new to this Site, and have a question!

I am currently 9.5 weeks pregnant, and 4 days ago had to go to my GP with an ear ache and had my ear syringed. In a moment of stupidity I didn't mention I was pregnant (not really connecting my sore ear to pregnancy!).

Anyway, prior to having my ear syringed I was suffering from horrid morning sickness and nausea. This all stopped the day after I had my ear syringed.

I went back to my GP - and they told me ear syringing during pregnancy was safe, but I am still worried. It just seems like such a strange coincidence! I have a 12 week NT appointment, but that is still nearly 3 weeks away... anyway I am now worried that something has happened to the baby...

    Hi Jane82,

As a member of this forum as well as a qualified Audiologist (hearing and balance specialist) I thought it would be helpful for me to address your concerns. I have not come across any evidence (during my training or through seeing patients in the clinic) that ear syringing is harmful in pregnancy.

Sometimes ear ache can also cause dizziness and even sickness as the balance organ is located in the inner ear so it can be affected by ear problems. So it may be that your previous nausea was actually (at least in part) down to your ear ache.

Alternatively, it could just be a coincidence and it was morning sickness that happened to disappear the same day you had the syringing performed. Morning sickness usually goes towards the end of the first trimester.

Please try not to worry as there is not any evidence ear syringing can cause problems in pregnancy. But if you still have any concerns why don't you give your midwife a call so she can reassure you or offer you a check up? I can emphasise with you as I had morning sickness throughout a significant amount of my pregnancy with my son. On the occasional days I didn't feel sick this also made me worry that something was wrong. So I understand how you feel.

I hope this has helped to reassure you. Let us know how you are feeling.

Hi Jane82 - I agree with ljmarsden your earache could have contributed to the way you were feeling. So long as you've had no concerning signs (i.e. vaginal bleeding) I would not be concerned. The ear syringing will not harm your pregnancy. However if you have any concerns at all talk to your midwife or doctor. Good luck. We'd love to hear how your ultrasound goes.

    Jane,

I agree with what the other women have said. I for one, never had morning sickness. Maybe the feelings you were associating with pregnancy are actually related to the earache. Also, you are close to the end of the first trimester, so like LJ said, it could just be a coincidence. Either way, I wouldn't worry too much.

I am looking forward to hearing more from you!

    Hi Ladies,

Thank you all for your replies. I had an appointment with my ob today (finally!) and all appeared to be fine.

I think I am going to be one of those people who just worry about everything during pregnancy!

Like you mentioned, it is possible that my nausea was actually in part related to my ear ache (which I hadn't previously considered) because am still feeling fine.

    Thanks again.

Anyway, I am feeling VERY relieved now.

    Dear Jane82,

That's great to hear that everything is going well in your pregnancy. Don't hesitate to post any other pregnancy questions you have on this forum. I know when I was pregnant with my first every week seemed to result in more questions!

    Best wishes,

    LJ
