    Fluorosis

I am noticing some white stains on my sonís teeth. I read articles that lead me to children having fluorosis or getting too much fluoride due to brushing. I used a 1000ppm toothpaste during his first few months as recommended by his Paediatrician. Shall I stop using the toothpaste that his doctor recommended?

    Dear aicapen,

Yes there is some debate over whether flouride should be used in toothpaste for young children. What is certain is that it should only be a tiny smear.

What do the stains look like and where on the teeth are they located?

    Warm wishes,
    LJ

Thanks! The white stains are located in his first four teeth at the top. They look like dried water, but color white. They're at the sides of each tooth.

    Dear aicapen,

There are some photos of dental fluorosis here but do note that it is a contentious topic in the dental world. I would see your child's dentist (rather than just his paediatrician) to discuss this further. It is recommended that children start seeing a dentist on the appearance of their first tooth.

    Warm wishes,
    LJ
