    Too Early?

Is my 16-month old son too early to be potty trained? I have a friend who taught her kids how to go to the lu without nappies on at 18 months. I was wondering if it would not cause any problems in the future.

    Many thanks!

    Dear aicapen,

Yes you are right 16 months is very early. The average age for a child to be potty trained is 3 years. It can lead to problems with not being fully independent on the toilet as they get older if a child is trained before they are developmentally ready. Health professionals recommend you leave it until the later side when your child is fully developmentally ready.

For more information about knowing when your child is developmentally ready have a look at this resource from Dr. Sears: 13 Toilet Training Tips Before Your Start.

Thanks so much, LJ. I'll just have to wait it out then.

I think that would be sensible.

    You are very welcome.
