    Coffee

How much coffee/espresso is safe to drink while pregnant? Will caffeine damage the development of a baby?

    Hi LaMark,

This is an important topic to consider as too much caffeine in pregnancy has been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage and increased chance of having a baby with a low birth weight.

Therefore, the recommendation is that a pregnant woman consumes no more than 200mg of caffeine per day. Remember that caffeine is also contained in: tea, energy drinks and chocolate.

Worryingly, one study showed that some single drinks of coffee purchased in coffee shops can contain more than 200mg of caffeine. For a full list of the average caffeine content of different drinks have a look here.

    Warm wishes,
    LJ
