    Baby weight

Is the weight of the unborn child genetic or is it determined by the feeding patterns of the mother during pregnancy?I ate a lot during pregnancy, had all manner of cravings but gave birth to a tiny baby.

    Hi Nancy,

    Thank you for your question.

Please could I ask what the birth weight of your baby was?

To some extent the baby's weight is determined by the mothers diet but generally speaking if a mother is eating well and healthily then the birth weight is determined by genetics. Whether you smoke and the health of your placenta also have a significant affect on the weight of your baby.

    Warm wishes,
    LJ

    Hello,

My baby was 2.5 at birth though she has grown in to a very big baby now.

    Hi Nancy,

    Thank you for your reply.

2.5 kg is on the limit for what is normally known as a low birth weight. So often babies who weigh less than 2.5 kg are classed as of a low birth weight. For these babies a low birth weight can be related to:

    - if the baby was born prematurely
    - the condition of the placenta
    - high blood pressure in pregnancy
    - the mothers health and emotional well-being

I'm glad that your baby has developed well.

Wishing you all the very best.
    Warm wishes,
    LJ
