Nonseverance, or Lotus Birth is where the cord is not cut and left alone to fall off when the baby is ready to let go of it. It is not commonly known in Western society but there are several cultures that practise this - Aborigines for one. I wanted to do it this way because I didn't like the idea of anything sharp near Kyra and did not want the cord cut at all. I wanted her to get the full benefits from the placenta - all the cord blood and the left-over nutrients that she would not of got if the cord had been cut immediately. I had also heard that the cord would fall off quicker than a cord stub and this seemed to prove true - the cord fell off after 7 days after I left Kyra naked for a whole day. I believe the cord would of been ready to fall off after 4 or 5 days if I had let her belly air more.

NO those are NOT maggots! This is the placenta on the second day, salted with sea salt and covered with dried lavender flowers. As you can see it is still moist and hasn't started drying out yet. FYI, the placenta didn't smell either! The only smells coming from the nappy with the placenta in it were from the salt or the lavender.

Kyra with the cord still attached and the placenta wrapped in nappies.

The placenta and cord completely dried out and preserved.
