Homebirth Stories

Homebirth StoriesIn this section of our website, you can read stories about other parents’ experiences of homebirth. Pregnancy and birth stories are a great way to learn about situations similar or different to your own. We’d love you to send us your own story to share with others.

The joy of having a homebirth is that your birth can be unique to you and your family in a way that isn’t always possible in a hospital. Our homebirth stories tell of women who made this birthing journey at home; with the surroundings, objects and people they love around them. These are women who have followed their dream about how they wanted to bring their babies into the world.

Birth is joyful, intense, emotional, demanding and life-changing… all at once. The home environment is uniquely placed to naturally allow birth to unfold at its own pace, in its own way. In these homebirth stories women tell their experiences of first meeting their baby – sometimes intense, sometimes harrowing, sometimes with unexpected twists and turns, and always life-changing. There’s nothing quite like a woman’s personal telling of her own birth story.

HBAC: The Difference For ME

My first daughter's birth was a scheduled caesarean section. I was told by my obstetrician that the less than 2cm distance between my cervix and the baby's placenta was not safe for a vaginal delivery. Being a first-time mum, I took his advice and we booked the caesarean. The operation went smoothly. Both my baby and I came out of it healthy. It didn't affect our bond. It didn't affect our breastfeeding relationship (which lasted for almost four years).

An Unplanned Homebirth

I was five days overdue and I'd been having what I thought were mild contractions on and off all day. By 4:30pm they were about 15 to 20 minutes apart. I rang the labour ward at the hospital and was told to stay at home until the contractions were four to five minutes apart. When I explained to the midwife that I lived 30 minutes from the hospital and asked if I should come in sooner just to be safe,

The First Time I Met You

In November 2009 when my oldest daughter was five years old and in her last year of daycare, the children in her class became interested in birth. The teachers, seeing a chance to explore this with them, asked the parents to write about the first time they had met their child. The aim was to make a book the children could share, filled with stories that were all about them. While most of the stories were about birth itself, Finlay’s

Diesel’s Birth

This is my journey of Diesel's birth. I can still remember clearly the day my husband Pete and I found out we were pregnant. After eighteen months of trying to conceive, we were in shock when we saw the two lines on the pregnancy test. It was real! In the early weeks of my pregnancy, I read many books and articles. These are essential to help me make a decision about where to have our baby. I had attended

Isambard’s Birth Story

This is Isambard's birth story. I knew this baby wanted to come to us fast, but I didn't expect to go into labour before forty weeks. I felt a trickle just as I was falling asleep about 1 am on Saturday 7th May, exactly thirty nine weeks! After mopping the bathroom floor, my mind was racing and I found it really hard to get to sleep. Where are the contractions, if this is it? And what about being Group B

Yiri’s Bush Birth

While I was pregnant my children and I visited our burral* for healing and learning time. Country spoke to us and sent us the totems of the new teachers that would come into our lives during this new chapter. The country also began to speak about the learning journey that the mother and new child would commence together. The country showed us a waterfall and gave us an ochre to dance to. During my pregnancy, whilst at our burral, I

This is Aminah Anne's birth story. Jacqui did a session two days before I went into labour with lots of cupping and extra moxa. After I left, the strangest feeling came over me. The Birth Story of Matthew Ali Zavieh November 28, 2011 3:15 p.m. On November 28, 2011, I was 40 weeks and 1 day pregnant with Matthew. Birth and Homebirth – A Grandmother’s Point of View

I teach my Prenatal Yoga Classes with great enthusiasm. As a mother and grandmother, I felt compelled to write my story about my births and more significantly about the wonderful experience of being present at my youngest daughter’s homebirth of her second child, Ivy Grace. I was a young woman when I gave birth to my first two children. They were born in a hospital and an Obstetrician delivered them. My mother gave birth to me in a hospital

The pregnancy journey and the homebirth of Sienna Jane

This is the homebirth of Sienna Jane. She was born at 8:40pm on Thursday 31st January 2013, at 41+3 weeks. There was a lot of joy on the morning I confirmed my pregnancy with Sienna. Craig and Jasmine were still snuggled up in bed when I snuck out to the bathroom to do the test, so it was lovely to announce that I was pregnant to both of them and enjoy a few moments together soaking it all in. Along came Ava

This is my story of a repeated c-section. In 2007, pregnant for the first time, I knew I wanted one thing: continuity of care. Based on the experiences of those around me, I had formed the opinion that birth was a medical event. Therefore I had determined that the only option for us was to find a private obstetrician. This is to ensure continuity of care and that ever-so-important medical expertise. I wish that back then someone would have

The homebirth of Miss Maggie Rose

This is the homebirth of Miss Maggie Rose, and looking back I had prodomal labour for at least a week prior to her birth. After numerous false starts, especially in the evenings ... it was all starting to wear very thin. On the 16th of May when I was 40 weeks 3 days I had a stretch and sweep where I was already 3-4cm & 50% effaced with a posterior cervix and could be stretched to 5cm. I had an

The Pregnancy and Birth of Phoenix Jean

Phoenix Jean Blanc was born at home on the 5th of March 2011 at 6.02am with the help of two beautiful midwives. Phoenix’s birth story really starts many years ago with my first thoughts of home birth and then the arrival of my son Kai. Reflections of My Pregnancy and Jasmine’s birth

When I recall back to the early weeks of being pregnant, I am amazed how my belief system and fear had already unconsciously chosen a planned, elective caesarean birth for our baby. After overcoming exhaustion like I have never experienced before, I started to question what I was doing being a so called ‘patient’ for our chosen obstetrician, so after many hours of research on the internet, a month later I was a changed woman. I realized that my

Jasmine’s Birth Story

Jasmine was born on Saturday 21st November 2009 at 42+1 weeks. Her birth was much anticipated, especially as I had been having braxton hicks contractions on and off for over a month before labour started, and gone past my “guess date” by two weeks. On Friday morning I woke up around 4:30am with bad back pain and couldn’t get back to sleep. It came and went and seemed to settle in a pattern of waves every 5 mins or

You can imagine the disappointment when month after month my periods occurred. Positive pregnancy test Ten months later the line on the
