Wish ListIf you plan a hospital birth, one of the most important decisions you will make during pregnancy is which hospital you want to go to. Considerations might include: whether the hospital is public or privately funded, whether it has a birth centre, whether it is Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) accredited, and what specific options they offer to birthing women and their support people.
In this section, PBB provides details of all Sydney Maternity Hospitals to assist you. These hospitals have been divided into six areas to make your search more manageable. Considering that public hospitals have catchment areas and the reality of travel while labouring, you will likely need to choose from the hospitals local to you or in a reasonable surrounding distance.
To find Sydney Maternity Hospitals in your area, locate your suburb on the interactive map. On mobile devices, tap on your suburb. On desktop devices, hover and click to be taken to a list of hospitals. Below the contact details for each hospital, you will find a Find Out More Button, which will take you through to a wealth of information about your chosen hospital.
These details include a description of the hospital, answers to FAQs, a broad range of information on the facilities available, and labour and birth statistics to help inform your choice. Virtual video tours are also provided for most hospitals and a photo gallery which we invite you to add to if you wish.
Finally, at the bottom of this page and on each individual hospital page, you will find a comments section that you can use if:

Hi Gina – I am sorry but we don’t about policies at Bankstown Hospital. Why don’t you call the midwives in antenatal clinic and ask them? It is just a suggestion. Can any one else help Gina?
How do I find out which is my local hospital for maternity care
Hi Kathryn – if you live in Sydney I may know which is your local hospital. So please share your suburb. Most public hospitals have an area that they service. If you choose to give birth in a private hospital you are generally free to choose the hospital of your choice but you need then to select an obstetrician that attends that hospital.

Roseville, from what I can work out, is in the Royal North Shore Hospital catchment area. On their website they say “Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) and its associated health services meet the health needs of four local government areas – Mosman, Willoughby, Lane Cove and North Sydney.” I hope this helps

Thank you for your question, William. Ryde is covered by Royal North Shore Hospital. Cherrybrook, I think, is covered by Hornsby Hospital. You will need to contact each hospital to confirm.

I currently live in Rouse hill and want to go public for my delivery. But the only hospital in the Hills district is Norwest Private.
I do not want to go to Blacktown Public hospital. Can I choose any other public hospital for that matter. I had my first in Hornsby hospital and prefer to go there again. Is it possible ?

Hi Rose – Unfortunately most public hospitals have boundaries and if you fall in those boundaries they are generally your only option. From memory, Blacktown Hospital is the hospital for Rouse Hill. Blacktown Hospital has a brand new birth unit – with birth pools and active birth equipment. See if you can view the new unit on their website. You can contact Hornsby hospital to ask if you can go there. It is worthwhile asking the question. Good luck.
Is there any public website or listing where I can check which hospital catchment I belong to for ante-natal and birthing services? I’ve looked but can’t find anything clear or definitive.
Hi Helen – I am really sorry but I don’t know of any website that offers this service. My only suggestion is to look at your local hospital’s website – sometimes they state their catchment area.

For some areas of Carlingford – Westmead Hospital is the local hospital. The remainder of Carlingford and Cherrybrook – Hornsby hospital is your local hospital.

I’m 31 weeks and moving house from Hornsby area to Gosford area – I cannot find any pictures or videos of either of these birthing units and there is incredibly limited information on their websites.
Can anyone advise on how modern the facilities are at these hospitals, how many water birthing suites are at each ( I want a water birth), and general feedback?

Hi Tanz – we are not 100% sure but your hospital will either be North Shore Hospital or RPA.

If you live in Meadowbank, you may qualify for Ryde Midwifery practice at the birth unit of Ryde Hospital in Denistone. I had my first baby with them and they are fantastic for low risk pregnancies to women in the local government area. Since covid hit, the clinic closed and was turned into a Covid clinic, and they operate with (and it seems onsite at) their related hospital, Royal North Shore. Your GP needs to send a referral to RNS to be looked after by the midwives working via this practice.
Wentworth Point is serviced by Auburn hospital, where I’m going for this current pregnancy. Note that they aren’t currently taking new admissions until about 18 weeks pregnant. You can try getting an out of area reference to RPA in Camperdown. Get your referral from the GP and head to RPA’s website: it seems geared towards outpatients handling the referral themselves.
Auburn hospital is in partnership with Westmead though only for higher risk pregnancies or complications. It’s been hard to find out all this info during covid isolation, so I hope this helps someone else!
I live in Wentworth Point now, and wish I was still eligible to go with Ryde but they turned down my out of area referral. Am hoping I have a positive experience with the midwives working at Auburn. There’s no information I can find online about their type of care or facilities.
