Using rebozo sifting may help a baby rotate during pregnancy or labour more efficiently. Assisting the expectant or birthing mother’s hips to move in controlled motions may encourage the baby to shift positions. Women describe movements created by rebozo sifting as jiggling or rocking. Limited research exists at the moment about the effectiveness of the rebozo in helping pregnant or birthing women.

Rebozo Sifting Wide

For your information, the rebozo is a Mexican Shawl used widely to help women progress in labour. Traditionally the rebozo is a long scarf worn by Spanish-American women that covers a woman’s head and shoulders. Women wear rebozos in various ways. These ways include:

  • Wrapping around the head and upper body to shade from the sun
  • Providing warmth
  • As an accessory to an outfit.

The rebozo is ideal for carrying babies and large bundles, especially among indigenous women.

Video Demonstrating Rebozo Sifting

In this YouTube video, the well-known midwife, Naoli Vinaver Lopez, from Mexico, came to Los Angeles to teach a doula workshop. In the footage, Naoli shows rebozo sifting as a gentle, rhythmic jiggle to help relax tight uterine ligaments and abdominal muscles.
