Book review by Jane Palmer

It was a pleasure reviewing this book. At first, I thought oh no not another book on baby sleeping – but this book is important. Anni and Beth explore the science behind baby sleep and attachment and the development of a baby’s brain. Many books explore sleep training without exploring the implications of this practice on the developing brain of a baby.

But not ‘Helping your Baby to Sleep’. Inside you’ll find out about scientific evidence that proves such practices are harmful to a baby’s development.

Also offered is information on gentle sleep techniques that take into account a baby’s natural sleep habits. There is information to help you respect the individuality of your baby. There is help for nurturing them in a way that is optimal for the baby’s wellbeing. With this book, parents will be armed with information to help make decisions about their babies sleep taking into account their own needs.

My only criticism of the book is that I felt that some of the research evidence behind sleep and development was repeated in one or two sections. If this section was more concise and had more information on the practical aspects of baby settling I’d give it 5 out of 5.

This is a must-have book for expectant and new parents.
