The average pregnancy lasts approximately 280 days — 40 weeks — counting from the first day of the last menstrual period. Your due date is what midwives or doctors once referred to as the estimated date of confinement (EDC). This is because in the old days, women were actually ‘confined’ to the hospital around the time the baby was due. Thankfully a lot has changed since then! The due date can be calculated by starting with the date of the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP).
