During Week 4 of pregnancy, your placenta starts to form. Your placenta is what provides oxygen and nutrients to your baby throughout your pregnancy, so it is vital. Your placenta also produces a hormone called human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). This hormone is the substance a pregnancy test detects to give you that second line and confirm you are pregnant. In the beginning, your hCG doubles every 48-72 hours. Your midwife or doctor often carries out a blood test to verify your pregnancy and test these levels.

What you may feel

Emotionally, you may feel a little all over the place. Whether you have just started trying for a baby, have been trying for months, or even years, finding out you are going to welcome a new little person into your life is a big deal and can take a while to sink in. Not to mention the rise in hormones you also experience. Physically, morning sickness may have already kicked in, as well as a feeling of exhaustion. Remember, it is hard work growing a baby, so be kind to yourself.
